TSUKUBA EAST JSB 13-04-08

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

what a day!!.. with the weather forecast changing rapidly in the last few days and tsukubas tight pit arrangements i was left a bit wanting in terms of shelter. so i got there early and got a friend with a bicycle to save me a pit in the first race of the morning… the getting a pit bicycle race. he succeeded and a big weight was lifted off my shoulders with shelter from the immenant rain.

a few prospective pit crews had dodged the bullet at the last minute so it was me and the GF. come time for qualifying i was in a quandry. it was wet and raining a bit here and there but drying fast, i made the decision to stay with wets as it started raining again with about 30 minutes to go, with only one set of disks, changing tyres becomes a bit more exagerated…anyway it stopped, dried out and i went out on rains with a dry track, some people had just swapped a rear to slicks others were on full slicks, i ran 8 wild, sliding bucking, laps with a best of 1.04.5 to put me 10th of 18. iwas disapointed but also a little happy that i was even that high. ill post a photo of the tyre tomorrow!!

come race time the weather did the reverse, i had slicks on as it was drying fast again and then just before the warm up lap it started to rain again. i as most others quickly changed to rains. and out we went. the track was definately too wet for slicks. from the warm up start i shot to the front as is my ritual of late. and then putted around trying to save my tyres as the rain was so light it could stop, dry out and id be screwed…

on the grid in 10th the light goes out i get a great start and get into the first corner in 5th, i come out hot on the tail of a ducati and finnish him off coming 2, blast a honda going into dunlop and im in third and following two all japan riders. my race plan was basically get a good start and then do what the guys in front do. the thing is i realised not only were they not gettting away but i could out brake them off the back straight and into 1. on the third lap the second guy went into first and i drifted past the guy as well coming into turn 1. i was now in second. next lap same again coming into turn one i braked later and harder and took the inside line, the leader stayed on my outside but coming out i let it drift wide to cut him off I WAS IN FIRST!!! :!exclaim: :!exclaim: :!exclaim: :bday: i was finding it hard to believe. i just focussed and kept my head down and i hung onto first until the 15th lap, by then my tyres were really starting to shred, i was having truoble getting them hooked up down the back straight as the track had quite a dry line appearing. i made the decision to start conserving my tyres, the rear kicked out once coming out of the first hairpin and made me remeber it was still wet. then coming into 1 a honda drifted by, i couldnt hang with the guy, but held onto second until about the 18th lap when another guy passed me, by then id dropped about 2 seconds off my best of 1.06.5. the rear was spinning the entire way down the back straight, i had to baby the throttle all the way around. anyway i rode out the race in 3rd position!!

WOW!! I couldnt belive i was in third and that i had actuially led the race for the majority of it!! 8)

so i get 17 points to add to my 9 to move me to the top of the table in area JSB and only 14 points from my goal of an international race liscence!!!

also picked up a few prizes. a new tyre, 10,000yen coupon, about 5 tshirts, other stuff assorted bike related goodies and a 5kg bag of Tsukuba rice!!! ha ha ha!!!

so it was a very difficult and stressful day, and luckily for me a few mates (other JSB mates) chipped in to help me with last minute tyre changes!! 8) 8) 8) and made it possible for me to compete!!!

…..
i cant say it felt great really, i as just a little shocked to tell you the truth. there were 4 guys in this race all with recorded race times in the 58s. but it seems they dont like the rain!! at one point as my tyres were really starting to lose grip i loooked back to see if i had any clearance. and the sight i got was the nose of a CBR right on my tail, i knew then that winning was going to be tough. but i did my best to keep them at bay, riding really tight entries and trying not to leave any room up the inside of the two main overtaking spots the back straight and turn 1.

i guess im used to riding with a bike all out of sorts so going in hot with the front and rear squirming isnt too diferent to normal… maybe those guys dont like it?? anyway the guy who came 4th has my division record at tsukuba of a 58.2 and he ended up about 26 seconds behind me. i dont understand really because i know i could have gone faster but maybe not without increasing my risk of crashing, and a few times throughout i remebered last years TC crash and just reinforced the DO NO CRASH OUT mantra i was carrying. in very changable and unpredictable conditions like these i guess everyone was feeling the same, and i guess everyone has different willingness to put there bike and themselves at risk.

Fuji 21-06-08

well, another drama filled day…..

got up to fuji on friday to get some practice in, got some old rains on, (BS rear, dunlop front) and headed out for a morning session in the rain. it wasnt bad the bike was feeling good, the rear was a bit flighty and much smaller than my usual tyre so i was geared a little short. still i snuck under the 2.00 mark with a 1.59.9 which is considered a decent time in the wet at Fuji. the forecast was for a day of rain so i was feeling good about things.,

shacked up in a hotel at gotenba and met fastbike at the gate at about 6.00.

shakened the bike and gear and then the dude showed up. it was time for qualifying, the light rain had just stopped and the track was good and wet. i went out following about 4 guys, snuck past one on pit lane, then onto the track. the track was wet with a few rivers but not too bad, first lap i just eased into it letting the new rubber settle, then hit the hammers. id passed all the guys in front of me on that first lap so i had a clear track from there.

my first recorded lap was a 2.00 and it went down from there, every lap a little lower, my pit board was showing my ranking, it started at 1 and when i pitted it was still on 1 with a best time of 1.57.4 Id secured a pole position by about .4 of a second with 13 riders on the grid. :bday:

so then i floated around the pits revelling in my new status as the fastest guy at the track, when i should have been preparing myself for the inevitable.

it stopped raining, and gave a little more drizzle, the race before us was quite wet but drying fast, when it came time for our sighting lap it was a done deal i went into the first corner with my rains on on a dry track. i had foolishly neglected to prepare a set of slicks, despite having them there and a spare set of warmers :x stupid. but it didnt look like it should be dry. but the track wasnt completely dry with quite a bit of it still wet and off line still damp.

anyway just about everyone else wisely went to slicks (as i wanted to) on the grid and i knew my goose and my tyres were going to get cooked… i babied it around the warm up lap in order to save as much rubber as possible… red light… GO!! i got a good start and stayed neck and neck with an R1 but i couldnt brake where he could due to my tyres and i came out of the first corner in 5th, snagged 1 back into 3, got under another going around the bottom and 2 more into the hairpin, took the last guy with a nice block pass into the chicane and i was back in first. i held first for about 3 of the ten laps till my tyres started to really let go, i couldnt get the power down, the track was now pretty dry and the guys on slicks started their assault…

slowly but surely i slipped back until my pit board told me the next guy behind me was 19 seconds behind, i chilled out and rode the last 2 laps home to a 7th place, just outside the points and very disapointed, rueing what might have been if the weather could have been good (ie bad!!!), or i could have been better prepared. my best lap was a 1.55 and the winning lap was a 1.50, which is a few seconds from what these guys run in full dry conditions so i think the going was tough all over…

the other bad news of the day was my bike looks like it dropped a valve, from the start of the race it was clunking and backfiring badly, and the longer i went the worse it got. :( so its off to the shop for daignosis and most likely a rebuild.

thanks a million for your help fellas (Ant and Colin) it was great to see you guys there, and of course all your help was invaluable.

my next race is in august which works out well for my rebuilding….

over an out!!

MOTEGI EAST JSB 15-03-08

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

got to Motegi on friday for an practice day, to have it piss down all day. i hung around, didnt bother going out as the next day was forecast to be sunny and i didnt want to upset my concept of what is possible by running rainy laps….

stayed at a hotel up there. got up the next morning to meet fastbike and head to the pits. i had set up and signed up the day before. we shakenned the bike and i went to the briefing. they had the kindness to show us (on video) what happens when the fulcrum pin on your brembo falls out at the end of the straight  ie this guy went accross the gravel and into the wall at 270km/hr. apparantly he didnt die or suffer any long term injuries… anyway we all went and checked our brakes…

qualifying rolled around after 4 trips to the toilet. i went out, and went for it. the bike was feeling good, a few nasty landings and near tank slappers after picking up and landing the front with the bike still leaned over.. anyway ran the ten laps, with a best (a new PB of 2.00.58) and qualified 7th of the 17 entrants

race time rolled around, and out we went for the sighting lap, warm up lap, i got another great start on the warm up lap and figured id do the same when it was for real. i did, and went into the first corner in 3rd, i had to SLAM the gate on 2 guys who were trying to muscle there way up the inside  . my mate was in front and i was determined not to let him go, and i didnt sticking on his tail for the first 3 laps, then one guy got by me, after id shut the gate on him half a lap earlier . then it happenned, i see my number on the board with the word “STOP” on it.. i got off the race line, eased up, and thought my race was over for some reason…. i saw the front 6 bikes sail off all tightly grouped…

damn i was pissed and confused, then i realised, after half a lap of touring :bad-words: . it was a drive through penalty. looking back the bike had twitched as i engaged the clutch after the red had come on. i had jump started… so i go in and the whole thing has cost me around 35 seconds and a whole lot of mixed emotions, what to do??? drive out the race and dont crash…. finnish right there…. anyway i saw a group up ahead and the fight rose in me again, i wouldnt get beaten by them at least!! so i picked it up dropping into the 2.00s again and hauled them in, passing them one by one all in one lap

gapped them a bit and then eased off, finishing in 7th place with a best (new PB) of 2.00.55 which i set on the 4th lap. its a shame because i was set to sail with the pack into the low 59s where they ended up and where i was determined to go….

a step towards next year all japan races and my interantional liscence with my first points in JSB despite more dramas. i cant seem to escape them… gotta get my shit better organised…

I was thinking of you Jim when i noticed i had dropped my best by 0.0000230233 seconds from the qualifying to the race

anyway a semi succesful/disapointing race day. i know now i can hang with the front pack at this level. im going to keep working on it and soon im going to beat them :bday:

next race is on the weekend of the 12th/13th at tsukuba!! if anyone wants to come along let me know..

the pirelli rep gave me a set of slicks to test, ive just got to write a report on them and give them back after use. so ill be testing them on the 19th….

big thanks to fastbike who came along, gave moral support and plenty of help with the logistics!! thanks a million bro!!

…..

bikes are 3 across, spaced offset so you have a relatively clear shot. there is a painted half box you must be behind. but just like motogp. as soon as the red light is on if you move you have jump started. its on for only a few seconds, it goes out you go, and go like the clappers, scramble push and force your way into the first corner, with heavier grids you’ll go in and around a few bikes abreast. that gets sorted out on the sweeping exit, as people drift to the outside of the track and head for turn 3 which is a real stop corner. its great for picking up places up the inside, you just have to time it right so your wheel remains level or a bit in front of the guy on the outside.

this last race i didnt have to try my usual kamikaze approach into three as i was in 3rd  and as i had sawed the line off from the two fellas going into one i figured (rightly) that they wouldnt have got the drive i did and i should be ok!

that second corner is such a great corner with new rubber, you wind it on from way back and exit with the throttle pinned in second, the rear crabbing its way across as you power out!!!! 8) awesome!!

that was the beauty of the dunlops, really tall profile the rear is a 200/70 and the front a 125/80, and the rubber is sticky with plenty of feel. there were a few corners when the back just hung out, i knew it was sliding but it felt so controlled i could keep the throttle pinned and just wait for it to hook up. When the BS went they really let you know about it!!!

TC 08-09-07
nice shots!!! i guess ill write the report here!! (maybe you can put that in the title solo!!)

well a day of ups and downs.
first of all let me say a HUGE thanks to you guys that made it out there. CRAIG and MIKE, man you guys are awesome. really i cant thank you enough for your support. SCOTT and KARL excellent, thanks so much for showing up, lending a hand and all the good vibes..

OK…

my mate had got a pit for me so we piled in, shaken, ready for qualifying. im always real nervous before qualifying. so i was pacing around, wringing my hands, and generally wondering about the relentlessness of the clock…

Craig took my bike to go around and onto the pit lane, i waited…. and waited….. and where did he go??? turns out i was a sound check short of a shaken!! eventually he showed up, i got on and blasted out of there…. new tyres so took it easy in the first lap, then let it rip….

to cut a long story short (well 15 minutes of long story), the bike was exiting like a wild bronco, all i could do was hang on. unfortunately i couldnt get on the gas 100% as a result, and was getting destabilisation of the chassis entering corners where the straights werent long enough for it to settle…
anyway i ran a 1.00.9 8) and was very happy with that, it had me gridded 7th of the field of 17.

relaxed, chatted, waited, wondered about the relentlessness of time further as it marched onto race time…

sighting lap, warm up lap, start…. i sucked, didnt get on the gas quick enough, lost a few places, was a little to polite entering the first corner. lost a few more, i dont know where i got em back, although i do remember pushing a ducati off his line entering the back sweeper up the inside at insane speed

people started to spread out, i kept view of the front runners for about 8 laps, then they started to slip away, i was running consistant low 1.01s with a best of 1.01.0 and the worst of 1.01.6 then BANG, lap 12 in exactly the same place i lost the front in exactly the same way i lost it last time i lost it again (entering the back hairpin). last minute chattering and down she goes, i slid, she hit the gravel and flipped over. i ran up to see if i could get back on, the levers were in place, but there was water pissing out of somewhere. so in the interests of safety i retired.

i was very disapointed, i was running comfortably in 8th, which would have put me in the points….

in reply to the suspension queries,

as you may or may not have read, the main problem that i am having that i can attribute to the suspension is my major chassis destabilisation. here is when it happens

usually at about 12000rpm in second gear. it can either be set off by
1) a small bump in the track ala. victory straight at tsukuba
2) shifting gear to 3rd while the bike is still leaned over ala midway between dunlop and the back hairpin.
3) rear end wheel slides, when it hooks up again, the bouncing commences ala anywhere.

what happens is the back end slides a little, or compresses a little and the bike generates too much momentum for the valving to effectively control it.

So….

i originally thought i needed a heavier spring, and the heavier spring i think helped, but as my speed correspondingly got faster i again ran into the same problem. so now you have the heavy spring and the extra force generated by the extra speed causing sometimes severe destabilisation and always slight to medium destabilisation.

result…

well the first thing to try is heavier valving, so i have sent some emails of to several lower level manufacturers looking for support and they seem interested. nothing firm yet but positive responses to my initial emails. fingers crossed. the make im hoping for is MATRIS. they are a european manufacturer of shocks, internals and dampners. and have been getting very good reports about the quality of their gear. anyway they are having an “in house” meeting this week to decide what kind if any of supprt they will give me.

i also have a K6 front end with OHLINS 25mm cartridges built and shimmed by the Aussie yoshimura team. itll come with some triples set to 28mm offset, which is the same as my current offset. that should settle my front end and bring me off the stoppers and hopefully stop the bike running so wide on exit. as i will be able to run much lighter springs 0.95kg to start. compared to the 1.05kg ones i have in there now.

Once that is done hopefully my woes will be over and i can get on with breaking that 1.00 mark at tsukuba.

oh well, when i get the suspension sorted out, i know i will be able to run with the front runners… so with that almost certainly being my last race of the year, its time to get things sorted out for next year, and have the bike ready to go so i can do some serious times….

thanks again for your support fellas!!

…..

you are right, a lot of it is due to tyres.

the slicks make a huge difference. primarily because of the amount of grip they generate, thus the front end chattering that bridgestone are renound for.
that was also why i went up 2 steps from what is already a heavy standard spring from 10.5kg to 11.5kg.

i have run several different pressures on the front and rear, but the pressure i was told that came out of HRC was 165 on the rear 180 on the front. i have run the rear up to 175psi.

it is the problem with slicks, they generate so much more grip that the spring rates and settings are totally different than dot tyres. when i ride with dot tyres i dont get any of the problems i am refering to.

and…

yes, i ride with a steering dampner. and its very stiff. but you are confusing front end wobble with rear end wobble.

TSUKUBA TAKUMI 01-07-07

TAKUMI class at tsukuba.
takumi is tsukuba tourist trophys top division.
i arrived nice and early, pitted with a friend. my pit crew showed up. i was really nervous before qualifying. i think friday had given me a bit of a shock in terms of how lacking my fitness, and prep was.

anyway i went out with a good attitude, and on my second lap i had dropped into the 1.02s where i stayed for 8 laps. i pitted and my friend from Aus who was pit crewing (one of last years motetai crew) suggested i tighten the rear compression to help with the running wide i was suffering from. back out, it helped and i finnished off the session with a storming 1.02.0 that gridded me third in a tight field of 13 riders. the first 8 or so were in the 1,02s.

i was happy but a little disapointed that i couldnt hit the 1s i was hoping for.

we chatted and generally had a good time. my nerves had settled after qualifying and i was ready for a storming start.

i got a great start from the warm up lap. just nailed it and sailed into 1 first…..ha ha ha
around we come for the real thing. as usual the flag caught me unawares and i gave a little hesitation, then got on it with a long low 2 gear wheelie i though id snuck into second but then the pole guy slammed accross and i was in third. there i stayed, repeating the morning performance of a warm up 1.03 then straight into the low twos. the guys out front werent making a great deal of headway and i knew i could stay with them until…. coming out of one the rear cut loose, it kept sliding, sliding then caught, i flew up in the air but hung on to the bars, it went one way then the other under me, i headbutted the screen and landed on the tank but didnt let go. and slid down and back on the gas….phew :|
i chilled a bit then, ran a 1.03.1 then back into the 1.02s. the bike was starting to slide more and more and i was toning down my exits accordingly. i kept an eye behind me and nobody was gaining. and thats the way it finnished.

the guy who came first ran a 1.01.2 in the race and qualifying
the guy who came second ran a 1.01.5 in the race and qualifying
the guy who came third (me!! ) ran a 1.02.0 in the race and qualifying!!

we could have skipped the race altogether!!

anyway lowered my PB a little and best of all my ability to run consistantly in the low 1.02s and got to spray the champagne around, and do the podium thing… so i didnt quite get to the times i was hoping for, but i had a great day never the less.

thanks to my GF, my Aussie mate, and a japanese racing friend for the pit crewing. my mate who i shared the pit with took out the GSX-R CUP with a 1.02.6 so our pit was happy GIXXER land!!….

another great day, and ill post pics as soon as i can!!

now onto moving house!!

17-07-06
Mot Things never go as they are planned…

FRIDAY
on the first qualifying practice of friday my bike developed serious 2nd gear problems resulting it not being able to downshift without the the gearbox catching and causing the rear wheel to skip. i had dynod the bike just before we went and wasnt suprised to see i had lost about 15 HP from my beloved 164 horses. i managed to run a 2.07 without using second gear and figured with buying a new sprocket and changing the gearing i would grab a few seconds from that. then next session my friend from Aus went out and high sided in his first lap coming onto victory. right in front of us. i still have the mental image of him and the bike about 6 feet in the air both upside down. not pretty.

damage report.
a sore back and hip, and rash on the arse region.
both wheels bent beyond repair
swing arm and subframe bent.
rear set done in
fairing stay and fairings destroyed
frame bent
tank badly dented (but still usable)
steering dampner bracket snapped
brembo master internals popped out.
triples and forks???

we got to the repair job and swapped all we could, i have a lot of spares so we ended up 10 minutes before the end of the days practice with my other australian friend heading out for a few laps to test. the daignosis was very bad. things badly bent and the bike rearing strangly on exit uncontrollable front end wobbles. bad chattering under brakes from the front end.

but it went….

SATURDAY

qualifying started early, we had been up late changing the swing arm and getting things ready for tech which we passed.
i went out for qualifying, things were bad, so i came in a few times to try and dial out some of the stability issues and chattering. it kinda worked i ran a 2.09 with squishy brakes (ie the lever hitting the bar) and chattering, and wobbling and no 2nd gear.. ho ho ho things were looking good!!

rich then went out and valiantly did the same time. so we were hopeful of qualifying but not really looking forward to running the bike for 7 hours, especially if it was raining!! anyway we missed out by one place, i grovelled up in the control tower to no avail.

we still didnt have and wheels but Neil had pulled out all the stoppers and went further out of his way than you could ever expect anyone to go and picked up a set off yahoo auction for us. a million thanks neil.

SUNDAY

scott and neil arrived early with the wheels and fire extinguisher. mike arrived a bit later(i had brought one from my house that was a little out of date, it was made in 1971 )

we got things sorted, went through pit procedures, changed the tyres repeatedly as it started to rain and then stopped, then started….

we were in pole position and Karl got off to a good start from the Le mans style start. he was third after the first lap. by the end of his 50 minutes and several safety car moments he was in 5th.

next was rich, who ran consistant 8s and 9s and looked smooth as ever. when he came in after about an hour we were in second.

i headed out to bring it home, the track was a little wet and i had a new rear tyre on so the first few laps were an exercise in defensive riding. lots of accelerating and late braking then parking it in the corner and leaving no room for the guy trying to pass me to do it  it worked, i got the tyre warm and the next time i saw him he was on the podium in third!!!
anyway the clutch was already on its way out when i got on the bike, i ran down to a 2.08 and then got the message from the side to slow down, conserve fuel, i was watching the clock, the clutch was disintegrating rapidly leaving me with no power. i rode defensivly and as smoothly as i could. the fuel light came on with about 3 laps to go, the clutch was going but the gap to the next bike was staying at about 38 seconds. my last lap was a 2.24 8) anyway i came around the corner to see our spot on the wall going crazy, and in the distance a small checkered thing. it got bigger as the bike revved wildly and i attemped to make it look like it could actually go fast.
it couldnt anymore and now it needs some serious well deserved attention. we had the champagne fight, photos with race queens, a few interviews and handshakes. it was quite hilarious to see my wreck of a suzuki with its miss matching fairing, taped on seat, caved in tank being poured over by the mass of honda employed photographers

i tell you its a feeling i could get used to!!

there are many people to thank…

to yasuyo who stepped into the team and took charge of all the bureocratic stuff, who got us to where we needed to be, arranged and organsied us, to make what could have been a nightmare a seemingly simple affair.

i cant express enough thanks to neil and scott, who went so far out of their way and without their thoughtfulness and help we could never have got near the podium.

to mike who came pitted for us.

and of course to my team mates who got through disapointment, pain, danger, rain, an unwilling bike, and kept going and in the end got all of us something we can be proud of.

thanks again and sorry to rich, the dude, and friends who offered your services and suddenly found yourselves without anything to do on monday

we’ll be back next year in some form. to give it another shot and hopefully get ourselves up there on the monday podium.

we’ll be out tomorrow night in roppongi celebrating if anyone would like to join us for a beer or 2

FRIDAY PRACTICE
i show up at tsukuba do an oil change before heading out for the first of my 2 scheduled practices. i was really looking forward to it. putting the oil plug back in (with the torque wrench) i strip the thread and cant tighten the plug, thus oil is leaking everywhere  the guy in the bridgestone shop says he can re tap it so i pull the radiators, exhaust and then the sump off. he gets it done, and back to me in time to go out for the last session i run a few laps and the bike is just bouncing from the rear out of every corner. i pull in only to find that the top bolt is missing off the rear shock height adjuster and the shock has been floating free, becoming wedged against the swing arm and at a distorted angle in the hole it was designed to go through :x wonderful. that explains the rear unstability anyway!!! so i pull into the pits and get it back in its place. unfortunately for me now not only is my rear ride height screwed my rear setting have been adjusted to fit the free floating style
:?
oh and did i mention that the newly tapped bolt was still leaking oil???

SUNDAY RACE

i siliconed the bolt so it doesnt leak anymore, and figure ill ride with what ive got and just do the best i can and make whatever changes i can after qualifying.

now let me backdate two weeks. I dont read the 30 page kanji heavy rule book so well, so 2 weeks ago while at tsukuba i went to the office and asked if there was anyone there who could check my bike out for regulations. they pointed to fella who came out with the book and carefully went over my bike rule book in hand and proceeded to tell me that my bike was legal for the race i was entering. I thank him for his time and think nothing more of it.

so i get to shaken on race morning and what do you know?? my triple clamp is illegal. i say but one of your guys said i was ok. they run off to the office and i wait around. to cut a long story short they would still let me but wouldnt be eligable for any prize, or podium etc. we have a discussion in the office and everything is cool.

QUALIFYING
like a bull to a gate i head out, they had turned off the lap timer device so you couldnt see your lap times as you went around (or my lap timer is broken :| ) but i knew i was running hot, the tyres were sliding all over, the back and front bouncing!! and lots of wheelies for the crowd
anyway i come in feeling good, i ran a 1.03.00 putting me clear of the next rider by 2 seconds. considering the traffic i was having to deal with i was very happy with that time.
pole position who could ask for more than that….

RACE

as we line up for the pre race check what should happen but the rain started to fall. then stopped, people where putting rain tyres on…then off..then…. as we get out onto the grid the track is wet. im feeling uncomfortable about it but figure ill just see the way it pans out. photos with the suzuki race queen it is the GSX-R cup after all. warm up lap and the grid…

its a flag start and i was on the far outside…..the flag drops and we are away…off well– then a little wheelie– a guy appears beside me then slips back as we enter turn one. then hes beside me on the outside as we come out and gets by, hes pushing a fast pace for the conditions and im content for now, to stay behind him because in my mind he isnt going to last… sure enough as we enter bridgestone he washes the front and slides off. i then have the lead, and focus on straight line speed, the track is greasy and my mind is still on low siding in the sweeper in similar conditions a few months ago. so im being very careful of my entry speed, and corner speed. focus on getting around then pushing the bike away from me and letting it rip. laps go by, i glance behind me and there is no body in sight, then i start catching up to the tailenders.
then its the checker and im home, with about a 7 second gap to the next guy. i ride around the victory lap for the race i didnt win with mixed feelings, pull into the pits and watch the podium celebrations from afar. its all cool. they called me into the office and gave me a couple of shirts as a gomenasai/ consolation prize. i should have been running the takumi class anyway (i still would have been illegal) it was a race that i would have had to fight to win.

well another day, another drama in the Blobs race diary…..

although the class was clearly wrong and you’d probably have been more embarrassed to be accepting the prize than letting somebody else take it who had to struggle more for it.
what are you talking about Juice. do you think i wasnt riding at 100%. have you ever known me to tool around on the track?? the fact is that the GSX-R cup is a race just for suzuki’s it has a graduation onto the NB class at 1.05, the NB class has a graduation onto the TAKUMI class at 1.04. if you graduate TC gives you a coupon for your next race to race for free.
i checked the last results and the winner got a 1.03.5 a time not disimilar to my own. the fact that i showed up this time and ran a 1.03 is testamant to the fact that i was running faster not that i was struggling less. in fact maybe rather the opposite is true, i have struggled more to overcome the barriers that stop us all from reaching the peak of our performance capabilities.

so,

im disapointed that i couldnt get the prize and the free next race tantamount to a 15,000yen prize. because now i have graduated straight into the TAKUMI class with nothing. the takumi class is within my range however, with pole being set at 1.02.1. a time i am more than confident of reaching in the near future. and if i was to, and if i was to win that race should i be embarased about that??

Quote:
woulda been nice for the first inspector to point out that aftermarket triple clamps were illegal for your class. Or maybe he is even now still laughing at the joke he played on the gaijin?
actually everybody was quite sorry and embarrassed about it. i have made quite a few friends amongst riders and staff there with my inane banter, good attitude and competative times.

MOTEGI OPEN CHALLENGE
INTRO

well it started badly, crashing on wednesday at tsukuba, the on thursday not being able to run any faster than 2.07 in my three sessions. experiencing gearbox troubles. actually (i found out later!!) i had snapped the lug off holding the throttle in place and thus couldnt open the throttle properly. so i fixed it and cut and rejoined my chain to run the proper gearing for motegi.

QUALIFYING

i had arrived early at motegi to re-fit the chain and get things sorted. shaken happened, time rolled around and i headed out for qualifying. ran a 2.05 then a 6, 7 and a 2.04.8 and decided to end it there. the bike was feeling good and i was happy with that time. it gridded me 22 in a field of 32.

RACE

sighting lap, warm up lap and the grid, i was phsyched to let rip. and from the start i did, i got an average start, picked up a few, lost a few, but coming out of 2 i nailed the exit and sailed into 3 almost colliding with a dude as i over braked but got 4 places back. there was loads of bikes in front of me and i was determined to not let any of them get away.
unfortunately lots did but i slipped under one on brakes at the end of the main straight. i had a group of 4 bikes up ahead and they were my target, i slowly gained on them, picked an R1 off coming into 5, then a CBR954 ran wide and i snuck under him. then i late braked past another GSX-R (so late it was almost a collision) and then the last R1 in the pack….. he had been moving up as i did, i knew my corner speed was better but he walked me in the straights, so i waited and after the esses on lap 8 i made my move i was right on his ass as we came out and i sailed up the inside, fucked the corner but kept him on the outside of me and was clear i was now in 13th position.

i knew he was going to try and take me back at the end of the straight and sure enough as i sailed past a guy i was lapping so he appeared trying my move up the inside, but he fucked it ran wide and i snuck through again, i looked over at my pit board and saw it was lap 9 i just had to hold him out for one lap, i made some ground and checking before the final hairpin i saw he was about 30 meters behind me… not enough to keep him out down that back straight…… i nailed the exit and was going to brake as late as i could, at about the 160m i nailed the brakes the back reared up…i was out of sorts, couldnt turn in, ran wide, he appeared on the inside and lost the rear, almost threw him off but he saved it, style had gone to the wind, it was time for the kill…but i was in the wrong gear and he snuck past that was that, we sailed home to the checkered flag…..

i came in

14th over all

5th in Open challenge (another plastic momento to take home)

with a new PB of 2.02.8

very happy with my riding, there wasnt a lot of drifting, i got out of sorts on the brakes but it got me past people who i couldnt out power. so you do what you can!!!

the bike is up for sale now. its done and i wont be riding until january next year when i pick up the new Gixxer….

special thanks to my buddy who pitted and was invaluable. sorry to rowshi who got stranded on the highway… but that is his story to tell. god knows where Dr Phil was….

Mot OC 21-05-06

scott (throttle) and i headed out from kawasaki at 4.30 am on the jaunt to motegi. i had been prepping the bike for a day or so, new pads, tyres, oil, paint job (4000y worth of spray cans!!). we got to motegi and it was a fine day.

qualifying was at 11.30 and i was phsyched with me new clutch fitted that i was going to have gobs more power to play with. and that was the case my first recorded lap was a 2.05 then 2.04 and a couple of 2.03s. i eased off after that and ran a couple off the line, got back on the pace then came in after 8 laps. with a qualifying time of 2.03.3
i was stocked, the bike was moving really well, a lot of sliding but the power was good and i felt i could go faster.

i qualified 12th on the grid of 31 bikes.

it was then a long break until my race which was at 5pm. scott and i watched the various races from different parts of the track.
my time rolled around and out i went for the sighting lap, warm-up lap, and then on the grid.
i knew it was going to be hard during my warm up lap, the long shadows on 5 reflected my tired and unfocussd state….

anyway, ive never got a good start in a race, and i was a bit scared with the new clutch and the power and all, but the light went out and i nailed it, made it into the next row, had a guy try and sneak up the inside of me and i shuttled across closing the door on him. there was no outbraking anyone!! and no outpowering them either, i ran with the guy in front of me, until someone came past then i ran with them, then another…and another…

well enough is enough and i stuck on those 2 guys tails, getting one back under brakes and then the other, i bombed it in 5 about 3 times running to the edge of the track under brakes, and saw the guy behind me closing again. i knew we had only 1 lap left so i shut the gate and rode defensively i was out braking them and i knew i had to because they both had better straight line speed than me, so i went hard in that last lap and rode to the chequer flag ahead of the 2 of them

the guy was directing me to the shaken tent so it seems id got a place, and i had…. 5th in the open challenge race!!!
and 12th overall!!!

i was very happy with the result and the days riding but a little disapointed that i couldnt remain focussed in the race but i guess it understandable…

i ran 7 of the 10 laps in the 2.05s with a best of 2,05.0.

it was great to hang out with you scott, and your help, and good vibes made the day all the more fun, thanks again for coming along and helping out, it was invaluable!

well i guess i reached my goal for motetai, perhaps ill change it to a 2.01 8)

cheers

tB

oh heres a photo of the newly painted gixxa, (great fom a distance, not so great up close!)

FUJI SPEEDWAY OPEN CLASS 27-10-07

talk about rain!!

i showed up yesterday and didnt run at all because i didnt have any rain tyres and i was saving my purchase for todays race. it was a bit of a mistake i think as maybe the practice would have been worth more than the new rubber….

Fuji has a viscious schedule so it was an early start this morning. I had set up yesterday and had nothing to do today but shaken then race…

A few friendly faces showed up, and i was greatful for it. Ant, Ant (me), and Antkiller…. :( and my mate ben. it was awesome to see you fellas, the help and support was just awesome!!!

i got ready for qualifying not really expecting too much having done a total of 1 hr or wet riding on tsukuba over a year ago…. anyway my amateur display (2.10.3) was cut short after 5 laps as the mist descended leaving visibility at a minimum. not great bringin it in at the end of the straight… basically you just choose a line with no spray haze

anyway the short of it was that i was in 8th, the middle of the third row.

time passed. and its race time….

sighting lap, to the warm up, i got away well on the warm up lap and shot into second, this isnt the real deal but i just knew i could do it for real. we stopped, red light…. GO!! i nailed it, and shot through, i eased off before i needed to then realised i could grab the hole shot, so i went into block pass mode, the guy on pole saw me and moved accross, around corner one and out the other side, he almost spat himself off in the biggest possible way… but somehow he held onto it… i knew where i was weak (chicken) and i knew i had to hold the guys off behind me and id make space on the straight and in the brake zone off it… i managed that for about two laps, some awesome lines  then they both came through in the same passing manouver

my knees were down, and i was doing all i could to keep up, but the slowly pulled away. nobody was behind me, and the laps passed. i started overtaking back markers, and that brought about a few moments as i wasnt about to slow or get off my line, or more importantly be held up by them.

the chequer came along and i finished happy in 4th place. a best time of 2.03.4 and a race time that would have got me a 7th position in the 23 strong JSB field. so it was a good result……… and then……

“number 34, the BLOB, please come to the shaken place” oops!! i filled up with the wrong gas tank, so despite buying gas from the trackside station, i messed up my tanks and got a disqualification…… awesome!! drama is my middle name!!!

anyway no probs, this race was just to get me used to Fuji, and it did. it also gave me a re-entry into wet riding and a valuable one too. so its all good!!

thanks again to Anthony, Pete, and Ben. who braved the weather and conditions and gave me the support and help that makes the day good fun!! i really do appreciate it.. for those that couldnt make it, no dramas!!

and

Pete i hope you got home OK??? the weather got real nasty on the way back!!!

so thats the racing season over. more testing, and on with the 16.5inch wheels that i picked up today. i have a new set of tyres that i may use in a few weeks to have a crack at the 2.00 mark at full course motegi.
