It's Snowing.
The first snow flakes of 09 are resting on the covers of my bikes. I like it, it's a rare occurrence in Tokyo and coming from a warm climate country it's something that I will probably always appreciate for the pure beauty of it. The snow will melt and be gone, if it sticks at all, and before you know it we'll be back in good riding weather. The thing is, I wanted to change a tyre today. Do i brave it in the raincoat and wrestle with the wet tools? As i glance out my window the thought is quickly dismissed. It will be fine tomorrow. I can do it then. Funny thing is, I wanted to change this tyre back in November. It hasn't been crappy weather for 3 months, but priorities being what they are, changing the tyre on the KTM has remained low on the priority list. somewhere behind watching Discovery channel, in front of the heater...
Sometimes i see pictures of other peoples garages, like Solo's Barn, or Colin's Showroom, and i get a tinge of jealousy. If only.... I did a year long stint with a work room, i wouldn't call it a garage because the bike had to be man handled to get through doorway. The sliding doors had to lifted off their hinges and moved aside. It was no simple task but it was worth it to be able to relax with the tools and know that if i didn't finnish today then I could leave things as they were and finnish tomorrow. Something that happened quite regularly. Tinkering with this and that. A place that had lighting when the sun went down, that had music, heating... Here's a pic of the ole place, nice overhead winch and plenty of bench space!!
Pay no attention to the mass of semi used tyres, and Bike parts. The space is all that is important. Even a small space like this is a valuable commodity in Japan. For most of us Tokyo dwellers there is little chance to set up a blokes place, where our mate Oil lives, next door to spanners, and accross the way from vice. Where most women would just see mess, and the risk of getting instantly dirty so extreme that the door should just be shut and left that way. And so now, looking at that pic again and i can't help but ask why this is such a low priority for others here in Japan, My bikes are under their covers, snow settling, and i'm left wondering when again i might live in a place that has a space condusive to tinkering at my own pace..... Post up your garages in the forum and make me jealous!!
